Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

General Admission Procedures:

Q: Do I need to complete a college application to take classes?

A: Students who are interested in taking curriculum courses for college credit must submit a completed Application for Admission to the Admissions Office at Stanly Community College. Note: Continuing Education students do not need to complete an application.

Q: Where do I get an application?

A. You may complete an online application for Stanly Community College by clicking this link or from the Class Listings page of this site.

Q. Is there any cost for the college application?

A. No.

Q. How far in advance should I submit my college application?

A. The normal processing time is approximately three weeks. Please submit your application three weeks prior to the class start date.

Q. Do I need my transcripts along with my college application?

A. If you are working toward a degree, you must provide transcripts. Otherwise, you may complete your college application as a "special credit" student, which means that you have not declared a major at time of admissions. Students classified as "special credit" are not required to submit transcripts from other institutions.

Q. Will I be required to take a placement test?

A. Special credit students are not generally required to complete a placement test. However, a placement test may be required for some classes (especially for English and math classes).

Q. What is the difference between curriculum courses and continuing education courses?

A. Curriculum courses are typically transferable college credit classes. Continuing education courses are designed for skill building and certification purposes.

Q. How can I determine if the class I want to take is a curriculum or continuing education course?

A. Each class is noted with a three-letter prefix and a course number. Curriculum courses will have a prefix and three numbers; continuing education courses will be identified with a three-letter prefix and six numbers. For example, Real Estate Sales is a continuing education course with the prefix and course number of RLS 350101.

Q. How are classes delivered to the students?

A. Students have several choices (depending on the course) to attend a traditional seated classroom, an online class, or a hybrid class. The hybrid is a combination of seated classroom time and a distance learning component.

Q. What if I have questions concerning classes and/or completing the college application?

A. Please call your military unit point of contact or contact the college at (704) 991-0367.

Tuition and Fees:

Q. Is my tuition free?

A. If your chain of command regards your classes as duty related, your college tuition is waived.

Q. Are there college fees that I must pay besides tuition?

A. The President of Stanly Community College and the Board of Trustees voted to waive your college fees for duty related courses as of August 18, 2005.

Q. Will I have to buy my own books, and where do I get them?

A. Books, materials, and supplies are the responsibility of the student or the National Guard. These items may be purchased at our bookstore on campus or may be purchased through other vendors. The college bookstore may be reached at (704) 991-0229.

Customizing Classes:

Q. Can a class be customized or developed to train for particular skills?

A. Yes. Stanly Community College can design courses to meet the needs of particular training issues. The general requirement is that the course will serve approximately eight to ten students.
